Finishes & Terms
Polished, honed, veining, sealing, and the vocabulary of stone.
Why Finishes and Terms Matter
Most confusion about stone comes not from the stones themselves but from the vocabulary around them. A finish can change how a stone looks and wears, and a misunderstood term can lead to the wrong expectation. Understanding the vocabulary is what turns stone shopping from guesswork into a decision.
Finishes: The Same Stone, Different Behavior
A polished finish is glossy and reflective, showing color vividly but also showing scratches and fingerprints. A honed finish is smooth and matte, hiding wear but sometimes revealing stains more readily. A leathered finish adds a soft brushed texture, and a tumbled finish creates an aged, weathered look. None of these change the stone's porosity — they change how the surface looks and how marks read on it.
Terms: The Language of Stone
Porosity describes how readily a stone absorbs liquids. Sealing is the treatment that slows that absorption — without making stone stain-proof. Veining is the mineral pattern in stone, and bookmatching is the technique of mirroring two slabs for a symmetric effect. Each term connects a visible feature to a practical consequence.
How This Section Helps
These pages explain the finishes and terms you will encounter when choosing stone, so you can read a product description or a fabricator's recommendation and know what it actually means for appearance and maintenance.

- 01 What Is a Polished Stone Finish? A polished finish is a glossy, reflective stone surface produced by grinding and buffing with fine abrasives.
- 02 What Is a Honed Stone Finish? A honed finish is a smooth, matte or satin stone surface with little to no reflection.
- 03 What Is a Leathered Stone Finish? A leathered finish is a textured, softly sheened stone surface produced by brushing with diamond-tipped tools.
- 04 What Is a Tumbled Stone Finish? A tumbled finish gives stone a worn, aged look with softened edges, produced by tumbling pieces with abrasives.
- 05 What Is Stone Sealing? Stone sealing applies a product that reduces a stone's absorption of liquids, lowering — not eliminating — staining risk.
- 06 What Is Stone Porosity? Porosity describes the open space in a stone and how readily it absorbs liquids; it varies by stone, finish, and slab.
- 07 What Does Veining Mean in Stone? Veining is the linear mineral pattern in stone, formed by impurities and fluids during rock formation.
- 08 What Is Bookmatching? Bookmatching mirrors two adjacent stone slabs like an open book to create a symmetric vein pattern.
